In the heart of Morelia, nestled beside the San Juan Bosco Catholic parish and conveniently close to the bustling bus station, a beacon of hope has emerged. The Albergue Sagrado Corazón Pro Migrante, the only migrant shelter in the state of Michoacán, stands as a testament to the power of community and compassion.
The journey for many migrants is fraught with peril. They face dangerous paths, hunger, and often, rejection. But here, at this newly inaugurated shelter, they find a sanctuary.
The main dormitory, with its 25 beds, showers, and bathrooms, offers a warm bed and a safe place to rest. The second floor, still under construction, promises even more space for those in need. The dining area and kitchen are well equipped to fill the dining room with the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals, a stark contrast to the uncertainty outside.
The small administration office and the interview and security guard building ensure that every migrant is treated with dignity and respect. Legal orientation is provided when needed, helping migrants navigate the often confusing regulations they face. The state health department, Secretaría de Salud, stands ready to offer medical care upon request, ensuring that no one is left without help.
This shelter, built over several years, is a labor of love, funded entirely by the generous donations of Michoacanos; many of them are migrants who have come to live in Mexico. It has received no government or church funds, relying solely on the kindness of volunteers and donors.
Last year, even before its official opening, the shelter provided refuge to over 130 travelers, a testament to its necessity and the dedication of those who support it. Now the numbers will swell, and the shelter will work hard to meet the need. There have been many heart-warming and heart-breaking experiences such as these:
One evening, as the sun set over Morelia, a young boy named Mateo arrived at the shelter with his mother. They had traveled for weeks, facing countless hardships. Mateo’s eyes widened as he saw the brightly lit buildings and the welcoming faces of the volunteers. For the first time in weeks, he felt safe.
As they settled into their beds, Mateo turned to his mother and whispered, “Mamá, do you think we’ll be okay here?” His mother, tears of relief in her eyes, hugged him tightly and replied, “Yes, mi amor. We are safe now.”
The Albergue Sagrado Corazón Pro Migrante is more than just a shelter; it is a lifeline, a place where weary travelers can find solace and hope.
It stands as a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is always light, and that together, we can create a world where everyone is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

En el corazón de Morelia, enclavado junto a la parroquia católica de San Juan Bosco y convenientemente cerca de la bulliciosa estación de autobuses, ha surgido un faro de esperanza. El Albergue Sagrado Corazón Pro Migrante, el único refugio para migrantes del estado de Michoacán, es un testimonio del poder de la comunidad y la compasión.
El viaje de muchos migrantes está plagado de peligros. Se enfrentan a caminos peligrosos, al hambre y, a menudo, al rechazo. Pero aquí, en este refugio recién inaugurado, encuentran un santuario.
El dormitorio principal, con sus 25 camas, duchas, y baños, ofrece una cama cálida y un lugar seguro para descansar. La segunda planta, aún en construcción, promete aún más espacio para los necesitados. El comedor y la cocina están bien equipados para llenar el comedor del reconfortante aroma de las comidas caseras, un marcado contraste con la incertidumbre del exterior.
La pequeña oficina de administración y el edificio de entrevistas y guardias de seguridad garantizan que todos los inmigrantes sean tratados con dignidad y respeto. Se ofrece orientación jurídica cuando es necesario, para ayudar a los inmigrantes a desenvolverse por las normas, a menudo confusas, a las que se enfrentan. La Secretaría de Salud está dispuesta a ofrecer atención médica cuando se solicite, para que nadie se quede sin ayuda.
Este refugio, construido a lo largo de varios años, es una labor de amor, financiada en su totalidad por las generosas donaciones de los michoacanos; muchos de ellos son migrantes que han venido a vivir a México. No ha recibido fondos gubernamentales ni eclesiásticos, y depende únicamente de la amabilidad de voluntarios y donantes.
El año pasado, incluso antes de su apertura oficial, el refugio dio cobijo a más de 130 viajeros, testimonio de su necesidad y de la dedicación de quienes lo apoyan. Ahora las cifras aumentarán, y el refugio trabajará duro para cubrir las necesidades. Ha habido muchas experiencias reconfortantes y desgarradoras como ésta:
Una tarde, cuando el sol se ponía sobre Morelia, un niño llamado Mateo llegó al refugio con su madre. Habían viajado durante semanas, enfrentándose a innumerables dificultades. Los ojos de Mateo se abrieron de par en par al ver los edificios iluminados y las caras acogedoras de los voluntarios. Por primera vez en semanas, se sintió seguro.
Mientras se acomodaban en sus camas, Mateo se volvió hacia su madre y le susurró: «Mamá, ¿crees que estaremos bien aquí?». Su madre, con lágrimas de alivio en los ojos, le abrazó con fuerza y respondió: «Sí, mi amor. Ahora estamos a salvo».
El Albergue Sagrado Corazón Pro Migrante es algo más que un refugio: es un salvavidas, un lugar donde los viajeros cansados pueden encontrar consuelo y esperanza. Es un recordatorio de que, incluso en los momentos más oscuros, siempre hay luz, y de que juntos podemos crear un mundo en el que todos sean tratados con la dignidad y el respeto que merecen.
